My 9-year-old daughter and I had two totally different film experiences when we attended a press screening of Pixar's newest film Inside Out. What I saw was an incredibly moving, animated masterpiece that addressed the tenuous and sometimes treacherous time that bridges the carefree feeling of childhood to the more nuanced and emotionally complex world of adolescence. What she saw was a silly, hilarious, and fun flick that just happened to have some emotional baggage stowing away on the ride. Adults will be coming to the theater with years of experience of feeling joy, sadness, fear, disgust, and anger, while our children are still figuring out these deep-seeded reactions. We went through this transition already ourselves, and when our children go through it, we'll just be in the backseat watching as their various emotions steer them through what can be an emotionally windy road. But young and old, one thing my daughter and I could both agree on was that it's the best Pixar film yet. As a parent, a movie fanatic, a one time film major, and a die hard Disney and Pixar film fan, I have to say that Inside Out isn't just lovely to look at and thoroughly entertaining, but it is IMPORTANT (that's ALL CAPS important). It gives insight into our own minds, our children's brains, and you'll leave the theater not just armed with new tools in order to talk to your children about how they're feeling, but wanting to be a better parent and person. But enough about me and what I thought of the film. What did my pint-sized critic think? Overall, what did you think of Inside Out? Oh, my gosh! It's so great! This movie is so good! It's kinda emotional in some parts but overall it's one of the best movies …ever. It is also deep. That's a way to describe something right? Deep? Well, it's that. Who do you think will like the movie more? Parents or kids? I think adults will like it more because they could really learn from it. I think kids would really like it, but parents would learn from it. They would learn about their kids' brains and to think about what they're thinking. Parents need to think more about what their kids are thinking so instead of yelling "go clean you room!" They would think about how that would make their kids feel, and would say it nicer. There are a bunch of emotions and characters in the film. Who did you like the most? Sadness, Bing Bong and Anger were my favorites. Even though Sadness is like really sad, she's really funny too! Did you cry in the movie like I did? I did! But not as much as you. I cried during one scene but I shouldn't say when, 'cos I don't want to spoil it for kids that haven't seen it yet. Who do you think should go see Inside Out? Everyone! I think it will be a big, big hit. I think boys and girls will both really like it. And moms and dads. And sisters and brothers. And I think even cats and dogs will like it! Stay through the credits at the end of the movie and you'll see why! Funny stuff happens. Would you see it again? I can't wait to see it again because it's really good and it's funny! And I bet I missed some stuff the first time. There's a lot going on!
